King & Queen of the North

After wrapping up the 2020 CRA season, we cannot be more happy with the results of our club dogs!

Ionn repeated at the CRA Champion and Canada Cup Champion in Ring 3 for the fourth year in a row; and Onyx has captured the CRA Championship and Canada Cup Vice-Champion in Ring 1.

It was made even special because Jeff was one of the decoys in the trial!

Now that 2020 is a wrap, we will look forward to 2021!

2019 was another awesome year here at SOAR Ringsport!!!

We had two trials competed with all the dogs, and had an absolute blast!!!

In the spring Ryan finished off his judge’s program to become only the second CRA French Ring judge in history!!

We also travelled to Florida and added another dog to the club. Her name is Tonka, and wow is she a spitfire!!!

In June, Ryan and Ionn travelled to the North Toronto K9 Ring Club’s trial and recorded the highest score ever in Canada and the highest score in North America since 2012!! Jeff and Niak also killed it banging out a passing R1 score – way to go guys!!

In September, Jeff became SOAR’s first ever certified decoy! Jeff did a very challenging selection under CRA Judge John Bayreuther to not only pass his selection but to excel with super feed back!

Also in September, Ryan judged his first trial and travelled to Calgary to compete in the Canada Cup. Ryan and Ionn won the Canada Cup and became the 3 time CRA Ring III Champions! Not only was this the third year in a row, but it was the highest average every recorded in CRA history!!! We also had the pleasure of introducing Onyx as she did her DIW Brevet.

In September Alex and Onyx passed their Brevet in less than ideal conditions and achieved a first place!!

In November we held our fall trial with Jeff and Niak, and Alex and Onyx taking first and second place respectively with less than a point between them!!! Ryan and Ionn finished second in Ring III and Alex and Ludo finished fourth in Ring III, both with passing scores!

Big things are to be had in 2020! Stay tuned

With the 2018 Canada Cup and season drawing to a close a couple weeks ago, now is a good time to write (and brag a bit… ok a lot) about how this season went for the SOAR dogs!

It was a season of high highs and low lows.  We will break it down by dog, but I wanted to thank all of our members, friends, supporters and mentors here at the club but also who live abroad and mainly Andrew Steinkohl, Alexandre Boulanger, Romain Mallet, and Frederic Beyer.  I’ve said it a million times, we are a small club and without help we would not be as successful as we have been.

IONN

What more can I saw about this dog.  He’s my buddy and the reason we have had so much success this year.  I’m pretty biased, but for a couple bad breaks (literally a line break) he would have pulled off what no other dog has done in North American French Ring history – winning both the Canadian and US Championships in Ring 3.  We easily won the Canadian Championship and finished Vice-Champions of the US.  He was consistently the top dog in the season standings and is easily a top contender to repeat both next year.

Unfortunately, a week before the Cup of the Americas, where he was the only Ring 3 dog representing Team Canada, he hurt himself and we decided to forego the trial to ensure he was 100% before competing with him.  It was a very tough decision as he was in top form and likely would have been near or at the top of the podium.  While we train to win, the health of the dogs is most important.  So he will rest up and we will come back next year.

Here was Ionn’s accomplishments in 2018:

  • 2018 CRA Ring 3 Grand Champion
  • 2018 Canada Cup Ring 3 Champion
  • 2018 NARA Eastern Regional Ring 3 Champion
  • 2018 NARA Ring 3 Vice-Champion
  • 1st place Dark Side Ringsport trial
  • 2nd place Cincinnati Ring Club trial
  • Member of Cup of the Americas – Team Canada

LUDO

Alex and Ludo had an absolutely rocket of a year as they moved from Ring 1 at the beginning of the season to successfully completing Ring 3 by the time the Canadian Championships came.  Next year all the work that has been put into Ludo over these last few years as we hope he is competitive to winning the Ring 3 crown in Canada.

  • 1st place Dark Side Ringsport trial – Ring 2
  • 1st place North Toronto Ring Club – Ring 2
  • 2nd place SOAR Ringsport trial – Ring 3

NIAK

Handled by our newest member Jeff, we could not be prouder of the strides this team has made.  From a Ring newbie who contacted us out of the blue and trusted in our club to source him a dog and to stick with the training program week after week driving two hours each way, to a solid Brevet performance IN THE SNOW at the Canada Cup.  At just 16 months of age, he is the fastest SOAR dog to obtain his brevet!  Well done guys.  We hope to have them into Ring 2 by the end of 2019!

  • 2nd place Canada Cup – Brevet

MAKO

Now to some of the lows.  Unfortunately, we had to make the decision to officially retire Mako.  After trialling in Ring 2 for the first time at our trial in July he suffered a heat illness and we came close to losing him.  As Mako grows older he is becoming less and less tolerant of the heat.  His spirit is strong and his mind and body are also strong, but just not when it heats up.  So he will continue to help advance our decoys.

PISTOL

In a cruel twist of fate Pistol was diagnosed with a spinal injury, and as a result he was immediately retired.  He had started off his very young life with so much hope and desire to work in Ring, but as a result of his diagnosis we cannot risk any injury.  He comes by often for fun bites, but he will never compete beyond a CSAU.  We thank Steve for continuing to give Pistol a great and happy home!

That’s a wrap for 2018 thank you to everybody who came out and supported us!  Next trial is May 17-19, 2019!

HOLY MOLY!!!  We cannot be prouder of Alex and Ludo for getting the first leg of their R3 at our summer trial this past July.  This will set the stage for the first Ionn vs Ludo trial at the 2018 Canada Cup this Oct!

We are also very happy to announce our newest club dog Onyx!  Onyx is a co-own and has come to Canada to live with a club member, Steve, and will be trained and handled by Alex!  When she’s old enough and assuming all health testing passes, we will breed Ionn to Onyx for the next generation of SOAR dogs!

Our 2018 trial was held on July 14th and it was an overwhelming success!

We we would like to thank everyone who came long distances to support our club and to trial! We had people come from France, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Quebec, Ontario, Maine and beyond!

Most proud of Alex/Ludo for achieving their Ring 3, and Jeff/Niak for their CSAU.  SOAR currently has the top two scoring Ring 3 dogs in Canada!!!

The Ionn VS Ludo trial is coming!

Pics of the event posted soon!
